Installation in three steps

Takes a minute. Step 3 is the only one people get stuck on, so it has its own guide below.

    Open the .dmg

    Double-click the downloaded file in Downloads. A window with the SuperSigner icon and an Applications folder appears.

    Drag SuperSigner into Applications

    Then you can eject the disk image and delete the .dmg; the app is already in place.

    First launch: macOS shows a warning

    SuperSigner is distributed outside the App Store, so macOS asks you to confirm the first launch. Once. The exact steps depend on your macOS version:

1Double-click SuperSigner in Applications. This dialog appears; click Done. Do not choose “Move to Trash”. (Right-click → Open no longer helps on these versions, the dialog has no Open button.)

2Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and scroll all the way down to the Security section. Make sure “Allow applications from” is set to App Store & Known Developers. Right below it is a note that SuperSigner was blocked; click Open Anyway.

3The warning comes back, this time with three buttons. Click Open Anyway (the middle one).

4macOS asks for your password or Touch ID to confirm. SuperSigner opens, and from now on it launches like any other app; nothing of this repeats.

No “Open Anyway” button in Settings?

The button only appears for about an hour after you tried to open the app, and only after you clicked Done (not Move to Trash). Double-click SuperSigner in Applications once more, click Done, then go back to Privacy & Security; it will be there. If your Mac is managed by your company, the setting may be locked; use the Terminal command below.

Why does macOS say this?

macOS shows this for every app that is not notarized by Apple, regardless of what the app does. SuperSigner signs on your Mac only and sends nothing out except the timestamp request. The app asks for no permissions beyond reading the PDF and certificate you choose.

Prefer Terminal?

One command removes the quarantine flag and the warning never appears:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/SuperSigner.app

After that

Open a PDF, load your .p12 / .pfx certificate, place the signature and save. The free version signs 3 documents; a license unlocks unlimited signing.
